Deaf Society of NSW
The Deaf Society of New South Wales was established in 1913 to provide services to Deaf people who use Auslan (Australian Sign Language) as their primary or preferred means of communication. The Deaf Society was incorporated as a Company Limited by Guarantee in 1922 and since that time has continued to provide a wide range of social welfare, educational, training, interpreting and support services for Deaf people and their families.
Our mission is to work within the community to ensure that Deaf people achieve their full rights and fulfill their responsibilities as Australian citizens. Underlying all service provision is an acknowledgement of the importance of working with Deaf people themselves to secure these rights. Our state-wide services include:
- Auslan Interpreting Service
- Community Access and Information Service
- Child and Family support
- Support services for older people
- Independent Living Skills Program
- Community Education Program
- Deafness Awareness Training Program
- Employment Service
As of August, we will merge with the Deaf Education Network, who offer the following services:
- Community-based, competitive adult training
- Adult education programs and services to Deaf and hard of hearing people
- Auslan courses, workplaces resources, teaching methodologies and educational points of view that support the rights of Deaf and hard of hearing people in the wider community.
